chapter five

PARAGRAPH

Sentences come together to form a paragraph. It’s as if the individual sentences want to become a group, because a group has more influence than an individual. Paragraphs explain. Paragraphs tell stories. Paragraphs use their influence to convince. While a sentence may hook the viewer into a design, it is the paragraph that keeps them there. This is a heavy load to bear, requiring appropriate paragraph arrangement in order to communicate effectively.

Few designs out in the market don’t rely on paragraphs of text. A food package uses paragraphs to showcase the product, enticing the buyer to purchase the food. Over-the-counter drugs use paragraphs to communicate the correct dose of medicine. A play poster uses paragraphs to explain the who, what, when and where of a performance. The label on a fire extinguisher uses paragraphs to explain quickly and clearly how to put out a fire. Each of these examples requires a very different approach to designing a paragraph. Working with this volume of words is a critical skill for a designer.
